Anna Woodward: A Cloned Realm
Duarte Sequeira is thrilled to present the debut solo exhibition of artist Anna Woodward.
The title of the exhibition alludes to the artists´ approach to painting by emphasizing the notion of repetition. The recurring patterns in Woodward's paintings of various clones and shifting worlds reveal a fascination with recurrence in the way she approaches painting and her subjects.
In her work, she creates fantastical realms that hover between utopia and dystopia, creating an area outside of the viewer's perception of reality where biomorphic creatures can flourish freely yet still hold traces of the earlier human-made materials and structures. The different degrees of plants reclaiming the planet can be seen here; they no longer fulfill the function they once did in a world that was previously governed by humans since what was once the world we knew has changed and evolved into something else.
Woodward works predominantly in oil on linen. Adding layers to achieve intensity, perspective, and depth, she invites the viewer to witness this overgrowth of plants while allowing for a variety of sensation in each painting.
