Overview

Jonathan Uliel Saldanha (b.1979, Paris, France) is a Portuguese musician, visual artist, sound and scenic creator based in Porto. He studied Tabla, with Hindustani music ensemble Jugalbandi and sculpture at Faculdade Belas Artes, in Porto. He is the founder of SOOPA collective (1999), co-founder of SILORUMOR label, part of FUJAKO duo and the director of HHY & The Macumbas and HHY & The Kampala Unit. Jonathan Uliel Saldanha is also the Associated Artist at Rivoli - Teatro Municipal do Porto during two seasons (2020/2021 and 2021/2022).

 

Jonathan Uliel Saldanha works within the interception of sound, gesture, voice, installation, performance and film. The artist is interested in operating elements of pre-language, generative choirs, acoustic animism, echo, mimicry and intracranial-dub.

 

His installations and performances have been presented at Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Serralves Museum, Porto; Accès(s) Festival, Billère; DañsFabrik, Brest; Teatro Municipal Rivoli, Porto; Forum Arte Braga; Solar Galeria de Arte Cinemática, Vila do Conde; Teatro Nacional São Carlos, Lisbon; GNRation, Braga; Centro de Artes Contemporâneas, Açores; Festival Dias Da Dança, Porto; CEC, Guimarães; Balleteatro, Porto; and Culturgest, Porto.

 

As a composer and musician, he has performed in several national and international festivals and venues, such as Sónar, Barcelona; Primavera Sound, ISSUE Project Room, NY; Nyege Nyege Festival, Kampala; Elevate, Österreich; ZDB, Lisbon; OUT.FEST, Barreiro; and Electric Ballroom, London.
