Petra Cortright’s core practice is the creation of videos, GIFs, JPEGs, and other digital files produced using consumer and enterprise software platforms. Cortright initially gained notoriety for her Youtube self-portrait videos, which used her computer’s webcam and default effects, and are considered seminal works of the Post Internet Art movement. Cortright’s paintings are created in Photoshop using painting software and appropriated images, icons, and marks, and rendered onto aluminum, linen, paper, or acrylic. The Photoshop files are endlessly modifiable, but at a “decisive moment” they are translated into two-dimensional objects.
