Art Toronto 2019

Petra Cortright, Yves Scherer & Jonathan Uliel Saldanha

Galeria Duarte Sequeira at the 2019 Edition of Art Toronto presenting works by artists Petra Cortright, Yves Scherer (Booth #C22) and Jonathan Uliel Saldanha (FOCUS Portugal, curated by João Ribas).

Petra Cortright’s core practice is the creation of videos, GIFs, JPEGs, and other digital files produced using consumer and enterprise software platforms. Cortright initially gained notoriety for her Youtube self-portrait videos, which used her computer’s webcam and default effects, and are considered seminal works of the Post Internet Art movement.

Yves Scherer works with various mediums and forms to discuss themes on gender identity, personal life experiences and emotions to Hollywood culture, public media, and spectacle. Raising questions on the boundaries of privacy and instantaneity, the artist explores the tensions between reality and virtuality.

Jonathan Uliel Saldanha presented a series of video works that take inspiration from Ballard’s crystal world and the toxicities inherent in the sensual relationship between human and nature. Jonathan works with sound, video, installation, performance and gesture. He founded SOOPA, a music and art collective in Porto and directs the ensemble HHY & The Macumbas.
