Curated by the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza’s artistic director, Guillermo Solana, the retrospective coincides with the André Butzer’s 50th birthday and reunites some of his most iconic works created between 1999 and 2022. Given the uncertain times we find ourselves in today, the exhibition confirms Butzer’s belief that paintings are “localizations of the greatest despair and the greatest hope, which is why they come closest to the very joy and aid we are in dire need of”.
