Joss Heierli & Tenant of Culture: Good Signal

May 13 - Jul 15, 2023 Braga
Overview

The duo exhibition by Joss Heierli and Tenant of Culture reflects on how authenticity can function as a form of currency. Through painting and sculpture, the artists look at perceptions of value through the aesthetics of deconstruction, spontaneous mark making and traces such as stains, studio detritus and wear and tear.

Joss Heierli (b. 1988, Worthing, UK) lives and works in London. He completed his undergraduate studies in 2012 at the University of Westminster, followed by his postgraduate in 2017 at the Royal College of Art. Through the language of abstract painting, his practice focuses on the ontology of mark making and suspicion towards the ‘artist's hand’, attempting to explore whatever space is left within abstraction as a critical practice. With a conceptual approach, he predominantly works in series to create a deliberate shift within aesthetics, and a distance from a signature style. Reflecting on consumption and systems of cultural production.

Tenant of Culture (b. 1990, Arnhem, NL) lives and works in London. She has completed a BA in Fashion Design at ArtEZ School of the Arts, Arnhem, NL followed by an MA in Textiles at the Royal College of Art, London, UK. By disassembling and rebuilding manufactured garments, Tenant of Culture examines the ways in which ideological frameworks and power structures materialise in methods of production, circulation and marketing of apparel. The materials used in her textile assemblages are sourced from various stages of the garment production cycle as well as secondary use platforms and refuse. She recognises commodities not only as the result of a standardised production process, but also as the social relations that arise in the process of their usage and wastage.Working across mediums such as garment, sculpture, workshop and installation her work suggest implicit potential for both destruction as well as transformation.
