Emanuel de Carvalho Braga, Portugal, b. 1984
Emanuel de Carvalho is a Portuguese-Canadian artist who lives and works in London. He holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art alongside a PhD in Medicine from the University of Amsterdam and postgraduate studies in neuro-ophthalmology at University College London.
Working across painting, sculpture, installation and sound, Emanuel De Carvalho draws on his academic background in visual processing to examine how moral and societal codes relate to perception. His practice challenges the structures of vision and proposes an alternative to conventional notions of representation, rooted in philosophical texts on sexuality, medicalization and institutional power, in particular the work of Michel Foucault, José Esteban Muñoz and Catherine Malabou.
His recent exhibitions include Galerie Molitor (2025, solo 2026); Perrotin, Paris (2025); Hauser & Wirth, Somerset (2024); × Museum, Beijing (2024); Nir Altman, Munich (2024); Gathering, London (2023, solo 2024 and 2026); and Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai (2022).
