Jean-Marie Appriou Brest, France, b. 1986
Jean-Marie Appriou is based in Paris, where he currently lives and works. He studied at the École régionale des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, graduating in 2010.
Appriou's sculptures explore the intersections of mythology, archaeology and the natural world. A master of aluminium, bronze, clay, glass and wax, he creates fantastical worlds and sculptural environments inhabited by human, animal and vegetal figures. His allegorical narratives unite past, present and future, drawing on a vocabulary that ranges from ancient Greek, Egyptian and medieval influences to pop culture, science fiction and futuristic realms. A bestiary of horses, snakes, locusts, sharks and seahorses, charged with powerful symbolism, lends his dreamlike universe a legendary, telluric dimension.
Appriou's work has been exhibited at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée du Louvre in Paris; the Villa Medici, Rome; the Palazzo Strozzi, Florence; and the Biennale de Lyon. He was invited by the Public Art Fund to show at Doris C. Freedman Plaza, New York, and in 2023 produced the etching La Constellation du Louvre, which entered the Louvre's collection. His solo gallery exhibitions include Perrotin and Galerie Eva Presenhuber.
