André Butzer

André Butzer (b.1973, Stuttgart, Germany) lives and works in Berlin. From 1996 to 2000, he studied at the Isotrop Academy in Hamburg. In 2001 he co-founded the Institut für SDI-Traumforschung (Institute for SDI Dream Research) along with artist Björn Dahlem.

André Butzer develops his works exclusively around the painting medium and its history. From the mid-1990s on, Butzer gains international recognition through his colourful paintings, representing cartoon-like characters. His work explores the limits and possibilities of the medium of painting. Composed of a personal vocabulary of repetitive forms and elements, he constructs an exaggerated reality expressed through vivid colouring and explores the possibilities and limits of painting. André Butzer ́s work references German and American history, culture and politics, art history, science fiction, comics and animation.

His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at YUZ Museum, Shanghai; Yoshii Foundation, Hokuto; IKOB Museum of Contemporary Art, Eupen; Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover; Kunsthistorisches Museum - CAC Contemporary Art Club at Theseustempel, Vienna; Kunstverein Reutlingen, Germany; and Kunsthalle Nuremberg. It has also been presented in group exhibitions at MOCA, Los Angeles; Sammlung Goetz, Munich; MUMOK, Vienna; Musee d'Art Contemporain de Nimes, France; Museum der Moderne, Salzburg; Rubell Family Collection, Miami; Space K Gallery, Seoul; Kunstmuseum, Stuttgart; and KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin.
